Right Away Sir

The world has moved to right leaning leaders, we should learn from the signs; if not got it right from the beginning; right yourself right now: right diet, right thoughts, and right behavior

OK… first balance the life style… positivizing thoughts, correct diet & behavior which is in right alignment with our right leaning thoughts

Yoga, exercise, meditation, balanced diet, good sleep all helpful in this rightful mission to healthy lifestyle

The Grims Progress

In childhood we used to be naturally happy/ we had the tingling sensation of life, as we grew up we sought the Kick from outside ( Addictions/Drugs/ Alcohol/ Bone Breaking Adventures/ Significant Other/ Earning Top Dollar/KIds)  & also tried keeping up with the joneses (damn those joneses – they keep on getting better at everything)

Harmony is what we seek next – we can’t leave the stuff we accumulated- we hold on to it rather than it holding on to us & simultaneously try all the latest fads … including reading such posts. But do not let down our own expectations; basically in this phase we are trying to be James Bond (at least I am)

No instant redemption

Then we find that the world’s happiest human is a meditator

By such time we have overworked our mind & it is unwilling to try the simplest of new stuff

Then we give up to the higher intelligence & lo & behold … life is simpler … we realise much is not in our hands & whatever there is just do your best… GRIM to GRIN

Fillintheblank Health Problem

The fill in the blank health problem can be treated

Whosane??

Fear of unknown stops us from seeking help

Hiding it turns it into a worse problem

A fill in the blank qualified health professional shall just talk, if required, run some checks. May recommend medication.

Caregivers role is paramount in helping, advising, ensuring right decision making, correct administration of medication

Hospitalization is last resort

The give away- Counselling (To improve how we react: Solve issues /change thinking or behavior)

To cope with problems + make one capable of coping themselves : Giving fish Vs teaching fishing

Help is all around us in terms of our near/ dears or if you want to make it professional then also

Try on your own but if not improving; take help

Do watch your mind while you watch others

Vice Versa

Mind affects the body & Vice Versa

Hence, Yoga (Done with complete concentration & mentally being present in the organs being tensed) is so effective

Various negative emotions viz. anger, jealousy, rat race induced pressures, hatred, unhappiness, lots of unknowns leading to issues will worsen the physical ailments or bring on their early onset

Some of our (modern) diseases viz. hypertension, tummy upsets, heart diseases, asthma, diabetes, ulcers have some mind related links

Installing Hope2.0

Anyone can help instill hope

Be your Brother’s keeper

Accept the person unconditionally, give time & care

Be calm yourself

Words are all we have

Proverbial light at end of tunnel

Tough times vs tough people

Work/ Relationship/ Economics/ Loneliness/ Alcohol/ Nuclear Family/ Media/ Peer Pressure/ Illness/ Unforeseen stuff: These happen to everyone: How We Perceive/ React to things

EVERY PROBLEM HAS A SOLUTION

Adolescence: Be a sport

What the people who have seen more years say : if only we had faced problem with more faith in ourselves; looking back it was not such a big deal- so there is a broader perspective to be considered

Spiritual perspective: One should not take what one cant give: we can’t give life, we have no right to take it {even our own}

Also, most of things in life are on auto mode ( thankfully) viz. body growth: you need not take care of them; you only need to take care of your reaction/ feelings/ emotions to them. Hustle all you can but without the mental burden. It will all turn out well

be Thankful

Suicide among adolescents (15-25Yrs) has a very high rate

Self harm & destroying outside things are attempted; suicide is a cry for help; person is ambivalent between choice to live & die

Warning signs of suicides:

  • Adolescent talks of suicide/ death
  • Previous suicidal attempts
  • Changes in personality/ moods
  • Changes in eating/ sleeping patterns
  • Withdrawal from friends/activities
  • Taking unusual risks
  • Collecting sleeping pills/ poisonous substances
  • Giving away prized possessions
  • Drug abuse

How to prevent suicides

  • Don’t leave the person alone
  • Don’t ignore early warning signs
  • Keep all harmful stuff ( sharp objects, pills, poisons) out of reach
  • Seek medical help
  • Keep your composure to help the person in need

Adolescence: The best of times & worst of times

Deep dive into adolescence related problems

Adolescence a time of physical & mental changes: adaptive capability & coping mechanisms can be overwhelmed by the pace of changes

Leading to

Irrational fears, emotional breakdowns, abuse of drugs, disturbances in sleep/appetite, loss of self-esteem/ confidence, over time can develop into serious mental diseases

Emotions ( hormones fooling around) can run amock

  • Feeling Low
  • Inferiority
  • Shyness
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Irritability
  • Social withdrawal
  • Anxiety/ depression

May be transient or may persist for long periods

Moodiness/ vacillating between swinging moods; changes can be stressful ( CHEMICAL LOCHA)

SOLUTION : MEDITATION which requires Pranayama which requires physical control (YOGA)

Challenges too much: we run away- not solving problem- mental dejection- arguments seemingly convincing- weak excuses/false arguments- Happens many times in life: failures/ disappointments; faced problem with more faith in ourselves; remake the inner personality whole & strong at that moment

Science of personality reconstruction: confusions in socio economic fields, unbridgeable generation gap, lack of purposeful goal anywhere, confusions in mind: the youth need a firm anchor otherwise  productivity ruined  & ambition thwarted

Old Indian Saying: Jaisa Khao Ann, waisa hove Mann ( So take care of what you eat & from where)

Defiance/ hostile behavior/ losing interest in activities/ acting in bizarre manner signs of an adolescent under stress & requiring all help as he/she cannot handle the problem on their own

Identity problems/ changes in personality/ mood disorders/ substance abuse/ disinterest in school/ leaving school

Very important role of near & dears/ teachers to identify the signs such as

  • Coping issues: noted by Friends/ Teachers
  • Drastic behavioral change: Parents
  • Sudden fall in grades: Teachers

& seek help from trained persons

Otherwise the persisting problem can lead to

  • depression/ mood swings with related sleep/ appetite problems
  • suicidal tendencies

Already due to the rapid pace of life & changing values; adolescents can feel alienated, helpless & confused

Friends can change rapidly during this period based on the perceptions of being in the inner group of the popular kids or feeling of inadequacies

Dependencies/ Habit Forming Stuff: Drugs

Drugs : Abuse & addiction

Instant high in an otherwise boring life

Part time Heaven at the expense of misery & hellish death

Can be inhaled or injected

Natural drugs known to mankind: Cannabis & Opium

Medicinal drugs: Opioids & Tranquilizers

Recreational drugs: Alcohol/ Tobacco/ Tea & coffee

Synthetic: Morphine & Heroine

Drug Abuse is Occasional & habit forming then it leads to dependence which is compulsive

It has to be that good that people are willing to give their lives for it or is it

  • Drugs are habit forming; easy to start hard to let go
  • Reliefs ( from mental stresses) are temporary the scars permanent
  • Reflex slow down & brain functioning is depressed

Drugs have reached the hinterland so not only a urban problem

Reasons for taking drugs

  • Experimentation
  • Tide over stresses of life
  • Perceived or real problems in job/ family
  • Aspirations
  • Peer group
  • Taking medicines without prescription
  • Un supervised teens

Drugs give a high then one has to take higher doses to get the same highs

Dizziness/ trembling/ pains/ diminished metabolism (physical symptoms of long term use)

Changes in personality/ Carelessness/ attention deficit/ neglect of responsibility (mental symptoms of long term use)

Effects

  • Family relationships spoilt
  • Weaken body & mind
  • Money is required to sustain this expensive habit leading to increase in crimes/ stealing
  • 90% of addicts steal
  • Thus almost every drug addict is treading a thin line & can go over into criminality ( even possession of drugs is an offence)
  • Financial implications of bad health/ no sustained job/ cost of drugs

Early stage detection by near & dears is important to not let the problem get bigger

  • Change in sleep patterns
  • Stealing of small articles
  • Spending time aloof
  • Physical appearance changes
  • Weight loss
  • Careless about appearance

Deaddiction/ Rehabilitaion is answer

But detoxification is initial stage real challenges lie in managing withdrawl symptoms

The caregivers ( friends & family + society have a major role to play)

  • Need to accept the individual
  • Social & occupational issues have to be dealt with
  • May have developed or may have preexisting psychological issues which need treatment

For family having young kids/ adults, elders need to

  • Give time to children
  • Take interest in their activities
  • Be aware of the company the kids keep
  • Educate all family members on drugs
  • Encourage participation in healthy activities
  • Extend support, warmth & guidance
  • Recognize early signs of drug abuse

The adolescents need to

  • Understand that one time use can get you hooked onto drugs
  • Cultivate hobbies/ participate in sports/ Avoid bad company
  • Be aware about ill effects of drugs

Dependencies/ Habit Forming Stuff: Alcohol

Alcohol

Socially accepted way of letting hair down & loosening the tongue

The size of the drink needs to increase over time for the same kick

Potentially addictive

Is it as good as it is made out to be

  • Causes numbness ( People assume it relaxes them)
  • In moderation good; but soon demand increases
  • All types are potentially addictive ( wine/ beer included)
  • Depresses nervous system rather than stimulating it
  • Causes issues on personal , social, familial & occupational levels

Can alter mood but can be addictive

Alcohol abuse is when the amount ( varies from person to person) consumed is excessive & craving/ deriving pleasure from same

To achieve samepleasure more & more quantities are required

Socially accepted so easily available & tendency to have it socially & escape mechanism from stress = vicious circle

How to become an alcoholic:

Start drinking excessively & don’t stop drinking till you lose all control & make a joke out of yourself

It does not happen overnight; starts with a thought- always assuming this time I will stop in time Issues with Alcoholism

Absenteeism/ performance/ sexual life impaired/social life impaired

Social life starts to suffer/ Family embarrassment/ Occupation hazard: Small thought/ fun derived/ small peg/ habitually evenings/ necessity/ larger pegs/ all the time/ Craving/ Unable to do without it                  ( Morning drinking indicative of dependence)

2 pegs a day 4-5 days a week: Anything over this is an abuse of alcohol

At this stage person has to take a drink to avoid symptoms of withdrawal (tremors/ vomiting / aches / pains)

Effects of alcohol manifest after 5-10 years

Excessive drinking causes harm to all organs of the body

  • Irritation in food pipe & stomach  + acidity & ulcers
  • Liver damage
  • Damage overtime to kidneys, nerves & muscles
  • Brain damage overtime
  • Impaired judgement

Psychological Disturbances due to drinking

  • Depression
  • Behavioral disturbances
  • Confusion
  • Memory loss
  • Social issues & family life spoilt

Effects on children if father/ mother alcoholic: Child becomes aloof from father

Women roles at home effected (Pregnant time drinking is linked to babies having attention deficit disorders)

Crux of Treatment is MOTIVATION

Can DO (withdrawal symptoms shall be taken care of by doctors)

Need moral support that they can again become productive members of society

Need our affection, consideration & understanding

No one else can help you- they can only help to help you

AA

Restart due to overconfidence

Reduce- Dilute- YNWA- Interests- the company you keep- physically away from regular spots

Dependencies/ Habit Forming Stuff: Tobacco/ Cigarettes

Tobacco/ Cigarettes

Can cause CANCER/ DEATH

We don’t fear death- we are afraid of living

Available everywhere/ macho image/ habit

NICOTINE: Slow Poison

Becomes part of our Daily Routine

  • Some can’t take a shit without it
  • Stress relief
  • To concentrate better

But is it as good as is made out to be

  • It is a slow poison & we are paying for using it on our body both literally & figuratively
  • Addictive ; harms the passive smokers; no high;

Portugese brought it tobacco to India during Akbar’s rule & we have taken it to heart- making up for all the lost millennium: chewing( zarda/ Guthkha/ Khaini) ; smoking/ snorting

Starting: usually friends/ school/college/ need to belong/ peer pressure/ adolescence/ curiosity/ role models

Continued Use: Habit formed

Losing out on Health & Money

The End

  • Moves on to try more dangerous drugs
  • Statutory warning is to be ignored till we get cancer
  • Chances of Heart Attacks increase by 5-6 times
  • Damage to lungs. Chronic bronchitis & asthma
  • A third of cancers related to tobacco
  • Women can have reproductive problems on consumption of tobacco

The cure for smoking has been advanced but it comes in form of cancer

How to stop: (Easier said than done)

But such is human nature; what can be started can be stopped; only cancer cells never learn to stop

Hang out with the non –in crowd

Out of sight out of mind

Discretion is better part of valor; don’t fight just remove yourself physically from the situation

Meditate & learn to relax

If you are living in any major city your filthy air needs are already supplied by society; need not smoke

Make the choice to quit

Believe  & Achieve

Project a mental image of you as a tobacco free healthy person
